An Expert Opinion About Why Grass Fed Beef Is What's For Dinner

Updated: May 29, 2019

For those of you that don't know, aside from being a health coach/blogger, I am also a photographer. I own the business The View From Scott's Office / www.theviewfromscottsoffice.com I was hired last fall to take seasonal pictures for Sage Coulee Ranch South of Bridger, MT. Being a health nut I was pretty excited about the job because Michael and family raise grass fed beef. Grass fed beef has a ton of Omega 3 fatty acids and is considered to be one of the best proteins around.

It reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, may help fight cancer, improves blood sugar levels and best of all it is free of hormones and antibiotics but enough from me let's hear it from the expert himself Michael Coulimore.

Michael welcome, thank you for taking the time for this interview. To start why don't you tell us a little about yourself?

MC: My wife and I grew up here in South Central Montana. Along with our two girls, we run a modest herd of cows on the family ranch South of Bridger.

DTFB: How did you get involved with raising grass fed beef?

MC: We have pretty much always raised grass fed cattle. From the beginning they were kept on a grass and hay diet. The main reason was that we felt that it was healthier for them and not as hard on their bodies as conventional feed.

ree

DTFB: What do you find most challenging about ranching?

MC: The most challenging thing for us is finding enough time. No matter how hard a person works, there are never enough hours in the day.

DTFB: Truer words were never spoken, it never seems to get any better either.

DTFB: What do you do when your not working the ranch? Do you have any hobbies?

MC: When not on the ranch I have a full time job doing HVAC. My wife and I joke that I have to have a job to support our cow habit. For hobbies we like to go camping and spend time with family.

DTFB: I understand that, I have a job to support my photography and fitness habits. You win though your habit is way more expensive ha ha.

DTFB: What's the biggest challenge you have had to face so far?

MC: The biggest challenge has been learning how to properly manage the grazing and use that to improve and regenerate the land. Especially in this drier climate.

DTFB: Let's get down to the meat of it, pun intended, why is grass fed better than the way cows are traditionally raised?

MC: Grass fed beef is one facet of a larger picture. Feeding the cows only grass helps keep them healthier, which in turn makes it possible to keep them antibiotic, hormone and chemical free. They are also able to obtain more nutrients that they can't get in a stockyard. which in turn creates a healthier and safer food for the consumers table. Thru proper grass feeding management, the lands (environment) can also be naturally improved and healed over time. Healed from past years of overgrazing, chemical usage and extreme tillage.

DTFB: Have you had any hurdles to face?

MC:One hurdle was when we started out, we had some mean old cows. Through the past few years we have been able to get rid of the ornery cows. The herd is becoming more gentle and docile. This enables us to have a more quiet easy approach when handling the cattle. They are not as stressed and neither are we.

DTFB: I can attest to that. I had to laugh when I was out taking pictures of them the last time they all came over to the fence and were basically posing for me. I had a good chuckle. From what I have read a calmer cow is better for you as well. It doesn't have all the stress hormones running through it all the time and passing that on to us in the meat.

DTFB: I know you're super busy so I want to keep this brief, I want you to know I really appreciate you taking time out of your very busy day to talk to us. If someone wants to learn more about what you do how can they reach you?

MC: The best way to reach me is by phone (406)-425-3043 or email me at sagecoulee@gmail.com
